CORRECTIONS WORKER INDICTED ON DRUG CHARGES

Trenton, NJ — An industrial training instructor at the Garden State Correctional Facility in Yardville was indicted today on drug charges, Mercer County Prosecutor Daniel G. Giaquinto announced.

Jerry Garlington (DOB 2/19/66), of the first block of Niagara Lane in Willingboro, was charged in a multi-count indictment with criminal attempt to possess a controlled dangerous substance (CDS); criminal attempt to possess a CDS with intent to distribute; and possession of imitation CDS with intent to distribute.  All are third-degree offenses.  Assistant Prosecutor Emil Herman presented the case to the grand jury.

If convicted, Garlington could face a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison.

Garlington was arrested on November 1, 2000 at the Trenton Train Station during a buy-bust operation.  An investigation by the New Jersey State Police had previously uncovered that Garlington was bringing drugs into the correctional facility.

Despite having been indicted, every defendant is presumed innocent until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
