GRAND JURY TAKES NO ACTION IN MAN’S DEATH

Trenton, NJ — A Mercer County grand jury found no cause for action on Friday in the death of John Matthews, Prosecutor Daniel G. Giaquinto announced.

The investigation centered on the circumstances surrounding the death of John Matthews of Edgewood

Avenue, Trenton, and allegations that emergency medical workers who responded to a call from the victim’s girlfriend on June 1, 2001, were too aggressive in restraining him when he became extremely agitated and struggled with them.  Matthews died on June 13 at Capital Health System’s Fuld Campus.

Members of the county grand jury met four times on the matter and after reviewing all of the evidence pertaining to the case, they found no cause of action in connection to Matthews’ death.

“Our investigation into this matter is now completed,” Prosecutor Giaquinto stated.  “Accordingly, our file will be turned over to the state Office of Emergency Medical Services for whatever action it deems appropriate.”
