FUGITIVE ROUND-UP COINCIDES WITH ANTI-VIOLENCE MONTH
TRENTON
– A round up of defendants who have failed to appear in court on a variety
of charges, dubbed “Operation: Spring Cleaning,” netted 59 arrests today,
along with 13 arrests on Monday, Mercer County Prosecutor Daniel G. Giaquinto
announced.
The
operation, which resulted in an “unprecedented” 72 arrests, was geared to
coincide with Anti-Violence Month, which is sponsored by the prosecutor’s
office, and the start of the spring season. “Operation: Spring Cleaning”
focused primarily on those defendants facing third-degree offenses, Giaquinto
said.
“It
is important to take all scofflaws seriously, not just those who are charged
with first- and second-degree offenses. This is the most successful fugitive
sweep we’ve ever conducted and is a testament to the cooperation of all of the
agencies that participated and the organization of the operation,” Giaquinto
said.
About
150 officers from a variety of local, state and federal agencies participated,
working in 35 separate teams that simultaneously hit the streets at 5 a.m. The
operation ended about noon without incident, Giaquinto said.
“We
wanted to send a strong message that anyone who thumbs their nose at the law
will be aggressively sought. The arrest of these fugitives, many who are facing
drug charges, will have a direct positive impact on the quality of life in
residential neighborhoods,” Giaquinto said.
The
investigation that resulted in today’s arrests was led by the prosecutor’s
office in conjunction with the U.S. Marshal Service and the Central Jersey
Fugitive Task Force. Capt. Donald Ricigliano, Lt. John Frederick, Sgt. Robert
Dispoto and Detectives Cory S. Kammler II and Joseph Angarone all of the
prosecutor’s office, and Deputy U.S. Marshal Richard Cope commanded the
operation. Prosecutor Giaquinto oversaw the operation, assisted by Assistant
Prosecutors Stephanie Katz, Michelle Gasparian and Robert Lytle.
Investigators
spent time locating defendants, who had failed to appear in court for everything
from first-time arraignments to having bail set on indictments, then obtained
warrants for their arrests, Giaquinto said.
One
of those arrested today was Thomas Williams (DOB 4/4/48), who was arrested by
U.S. Marshals in Miami, Florida. Williams, a former supervisor with the Division
of Youth and Family Services in Trenton, was wanted in connection with charges
he bilked the agency out of about $30,000.Williams faces second-degree charges
of official misconduct that could result in a maximum 10 years in prison if
convicted, Giaquinto said.
The
New Jersey National Guard assisted in today’s operation by allowing officers
to process arrestees at its armory on Eggerts Crossing Road in Lawrence. The
armory also served as the operation command post.
After
their arrests, defendants were transported to the Mercer County Detention
Center, adjacent to the Mercer County Courthouse, for further processing. All
were scheduled to appear before Superior Court Judge Charles A. Delehey.
Additional
agencies providing manpower for the sweep were the federal Bureau of Alcohol
Tobacco and Firearms, New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit, Mercer County
Sheriff’s Department; police departments from Trenton, Hamilton, Ewing,
Lawrence, East and West Windsor, Princeton Borough and Township, Pennington,
Hightstown, Washington, Hopewell Township, Burlington City and Morrisville, Pa.;
as well as the FBI, federal Drug Administration, federal Drug Enforcement
Agency, federal Immigration and Naturalization Services, New Jersey State Parole
Unit, U.S. Secret Service, Mercer County Corrections, New Jersey Corrections
Fugitive Unit, Burlington County Sheriff’s Department; and prosecutor’s
offices from Ocean, Monmouth, Middlesex, Hunterdon and Burlington counties.
“This
operation could not have been a success without the enthusiastic cooperation and
assistance from all of these agencies,” Giaquinto said.
All
of those taken into custody for failing to appear in court were being held
without bail until they could appear in court to have the matter addressed.
