Trenton,
NJ — A Trenton man wanted since 1991 for multiple drug offenses was recently
arrested in Norfolk, Virginia following an investigation by the Central Jersey
Fugitive Task Force (CJFTF), Mercer County Prosecutor Daniel G. Giaquinto and
U.S. Marshal Charles L. McNeal announced today.
Roy
R. McDaniels (DOB 6/13/51), formerly of the first block of Spring Street in
Trenton, was arrested without incident at his residence in Norfolk, Virginia at
approximately 3 p.m. on February 26, 2001 by deputies of the U.S. Marshals
Service.
“This
arrest is a complement to the tenacity of the task force,” Giaquinto said. “Despite the fact that this defendant was on the lam for 10
years and living in Virginia, we were able to bring him to justice.”
McDaniels
was convicted of possession of phencyclidine (PCP) on May 2, 1991. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest on August 12, 1991
after he failed to appear for sentencing.
A
second bench warrant was issued on September 23, 1991 after McDaniels failed to
appear for a pretrial conference regarding drug offenses from a separate
incident. He was indicted for
possession of PCP and possession with intent to distribute on November 7, 1989
by a Mercer County grand jury.
Detective
Cory S. Kammler II, a detective with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and
a member of the task force, had been actively working the case since 1996.
Through an investigation, Kammler
developed
leads relating to McDaniels’ whereabouts and Deputy U.S. Marshal Tim Hein
forwarded the information to the U.S. Marshals Service in Norfolk, VA.
The
Central Jersey Fugitive Task Force targets violent and drug-related fugitives
wanted on state and federal warrants. It
is led by Mercer County Prosecutor Daniel G. Giaquinto and U.S. Marshal
Charles L. McNeal and comprised of members of the Trenton District of the U.S.
Marshals Service and officers of the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, the
New Jersey State Police, the Hamilton Township Police Department and the Trenton
Police Department.
McDaniels is currently in custody in the Norfolk City Jail pending extradition proceedings.
