PROSECUTOR PRESENTS UNDERWATER METAL DETECTOR TO TRENTON FIRE DEPARTMENT DIVE RESCUE/RECOVERY TEAM

Trenton, NJ—Recognizing the valuable assistance they provide for law enforcement agencies throughout Mercer County, Mercer County Prosecutor Daniel G. Giaquinto today presented the Trenton Fire Department’s Dive Rescue/Recovery Team with a Surf PI Pro underwater metal detector.

According to Prosecutor Giaquinto, the Dive Rescue/Recovery Team assists all county law enforcement agencies in a number of missions including the recovery of weapons which have been thrown into various bodies of water by a perpetrator.  The Dive Rescue/Recovery Team is called upon to locate the weapon through an underwater search.

The prosecutor indicated that the Dive rescue Team’s work is often hampered by silt and mud which is stirred-up by divers negating visual searching.  The Surf PI Pro unit, which was designed specifically for shallow-water operations, literally allows the diver to “see through” the mud and silt greatly enhancing the prospects of recovering the weapon.

“The Dive Rescue/Recovery Team is a tireless ally of all Mercer County law enforcement agencies.  We are pleased to present them with the Surf PI Pro underwater metal detector which will be a valuable asset to the Team in their shallow-water operations,” said Giaquinto.

The need for the metal detector, which costs $555, materialized in August of 2002 when the Team was assisting the Ewing Police Department in searching for a gun used in a shooting near the old City Gardens.  The Team searched for hours with no luck due to the murky water conditions.

Giaquinto noted that the metal detector was purchased with forfeiture funds.
