Telephone Threats

The most likely person to receive a telephone bomb threat are clerical and administrative personnel.

These personnel should familiarize themselves with the threat check list on the reverse side of this pamphlet.

Schools and offices should have CALLER ID on telephones that receive outside calls.

The call taker should also be familiar with the *57 service that will attempt to trace incoming calls immediately

after the call is received.

Actions the call taker should take:

Listen carefully and remain calm.

Follow the instructions on the THREAT CHECK LIST on the reverse side of this pamphlet.

If possible, make notes on a separate sheet of paper.

Remember to check the CALLER ID and press *57 immediately after caller hangs up.

Actions that the school or office administrator should take:

Immediately notify your local police by dialing 911.

AND IN CASE OF A BOMB THREAT:

Immediately implement the school or office evacuation plan.

DO NOT attempt to search for a bomb.

With bomb threats, students, staff and personnel should be evacuated and kept at least 500 feet from the building.

Evacuation plans should NOT include two way radios or cell phones as they could trigger a device.

As part of a plan, ensure that an accurate accounting of students, staff and all personnel is received by the on scene safety commander.

Mailed Threats

Do not handle any suspicious letters or packages.

Contact the local police department by dialing 911.

Immediately evacuate the premise according to the evacuation plan
